Golden Milk — Haldi Doodh

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole cow milk (or almond milk)
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder (Haldi)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper (Kali Mirch)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder (Dalchini)
  • 1 small piece fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon pure cow ghee
  • 1 teaspoon raw honey (add after cooling)
  • 1 pinch cardamom powder (Elaichi)
  • 1 pinch saffron strands (Kesar) — optional
  • Instructions

    Step 1: Heat Milk

Pour milk into a saucepan and add turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon, ginger, and saffron. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat.

    Step 2: Simmer

Let it simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally. The milk will turn a beautiful golden color. Do not boil vigorously.

    Step 3: Add Ghee

Remove from heat and stir in the ghee. Ghee enhances the absorption of turmeric's active compounds (curcumin is fat-soluble).

    Step 4: Serve

Pour into cups. Once the temperature is comfortably warm (not hot), add honey and cardamom. Stir and drink mindfully before bed.

    Important Ayurvedic Note

Never heat honey above 40°C — in Ayurveda, heated honey produces Ama (toxins). Always add honey after the milk has cooled to a drinkable temperature. Black pepper increases turmeric absorption by 2000%.
