Agni

The digestive fire — the cornerstone of health in Ayurveda.

Agni is the biological fire responsible for all digestive and metabolic processes in the body. Jatharagni (the main digestive fire in the stomach) is considered the root of all health — when it is strong, food is properly digested, nutrients are absorbed, and Ama (toxins) are not formed. The Rishis taught that the strength of Agni determines the quality of health, longevity, and even spiritual practice. Ayurveda recognizes 13 types of Agni governing different transformative processes.
